This fish is definitely the strangest looking state record caught by the crew of the Possession Limit. In August 2009, Richard LaBouliere was dropping 750 feet down with a Torium 20 and felt a slight tug on the line. While on the way up, he wasn’t really sure he had a fish, but this is what finally came to the surface.
The biologists at TP&W originally identified this as a largescale lizardfish and Richard received the official state record paperwork indicating such.
A few weeks later Richard received another set of paperwork with the name “Yellowfin Aulopus”, and an explanation letter stating that the fish had been misidentified originally. Sure enough, the pictures which we were able to find on the internet seem to match.
