While most anglers prefer to target larger species, one of my crew, Rick Gaido, is actually a child fish predator. While we were deep dropping the same humps where Darrell Bezecny landed his state record Barrelfish, Rick decided to make a drop using sabiki size hooks and tiny pieces of bait. Using rod and reel, and not even realizing he had a bite, Rick brought up this 5 3/4″ specimen, known as a Wenchman Snapper. I doubt that Rick has to worry about a rush of other anglers targeting this species. Rick’s first state record… a snowy grouper, would probably have enjoyed eating his second state record.
