On August 9, 2008, angler Donald McClean brought up an unusual deepwater catch for the Texas coast, a Queen Snapper. The fish was caught on the electric reel, in about 750′ of water. This 5.5 Lb fish became the first queen snapper in the Texas record books, and the first state record catch for Donald.

On June 27, 2009; we stopped to fish a hump in about 500′ of water, hoping for a few more grouper to fill the box. Trevin Eckersley wanted to try out an oversized knife jig he had recently bought. On his first drop with the new jig, he brought up a jumbo queen snapper. His catch weighed 11.5lbs and is the first rod and reel record for queen snapper, as well as the official water body record.

On August 28, 2009, I came down off the flybridge just to show the crew how to work the electric reel. I dropped to be bottom and had an immediate bite. To complete the training exercise, I flipped the switch up and a few minutes later boated a 7Lb 5Oz Queen Snapper…setting a new electric reel record.

In August 2010, I heard that another angler had set a new electric reel record with a 13-2 Queen. Not to be outdone, on our very next trip, Mike Luchak brought in a 35″, 13lb-10Oz Queen on the electric reel, setting a new water body record as well.

Just a couple of weeks later, Mike’s record was broken when Robert Eschenburg brought up something large and red on the Kristal reel… it turned out to be a 41″, 16lb 10oz Queen, a new water body record and electric reel record.
