8/20/05 | 121.0 Lbs | Capt. John Stout | Rod and Reel |
All those state and world record catches from the Possession Limit, but the poor old captain is always on the flybridge putting his crew on the honey holes.
Finally, on a particularly nice calm day in August 2005 I came down, and sent my favorite glow in the dark bucktail jig down 250 feet to the bottom. I was using a Torium 16 loaded with 50 lb power pro and the usual 7′ jigging rod. When I set the hook, there was no doubt I had hooked a solid fish, so I asked the others to bring their lines in. Unfortunately, as Guy Stansel was cranking in his jig, it got hit. For the next 45 minutes we did a delicate dance around the cockpit, doing everything possible to keep our lines from crossing. Guy boated his fish first, a 110Lb Amberjack, just 5Lbs short of the longstanding Texas record (115 Lbs). A few minutes later mine was brought to gaff.
When we weighed it back at the dock, I finally got my own state record… 121 Lbs. (it had lost the extra 1/2 lb when the weighmaster finally arrived). This fish stood as the Texas State Record until 2020..
