On August 9, 2008; it was Lars Nelson’s turn to handle the electric reel. When the leader broke the surface, he had a species usually referred to as a “barrelfish”, which weighed 13.7 Lbs. There was no such species in the state record book, so we went to the TPWD biologist for verification. Turns out a “barrelfish” is officially a Black Driftfish. The record at the time was about a pound less than Lar’s fish, entitling Lars to his first state record catch.
About a month later, during our last trip before hurricane Ike, Richard LaBouliere was taking his turn on the electric reel and brought up an even bigger Black Driftfish, at 18.5 Lbs. As Lars has now learned, records are made to be broken on the Possession Limit.
On July 11, 2010, while fishing some humps in 600′ of water with rod and reel, Darrell Bezecny brought over the gunnel the largest Barrelfish ever on the Possession Limit, and even the largest in Texas. The 25Lb 6Oz Barrelfish is now the State Record, beating the previous rod and reel record by about 8 lbs. Had this fish been caught last season, it would also have set a new IGFA World record, unfortunately a 28lb barrelfish caught in Florida last September now holds that title
